Distinguished and Famous people from Thomastown

🏡 Christian and Sophia Ziebell

Christian and Sophia Ziebell were among the German migrant families who developed the dairy-farming settlement of Westgarthtown, now within Thomastown and Lalor. Their bluestone farmhouse, built in the 1850s, survives amid a very different suburban landscape. Its associated barn, smokehouse, bathhouse and garden help explain how the family organised domestic and farming life. The nearby church and cemetery preserve other parts of the settlement's history. The house's survival makes the Ziebells unusually tangible local figures: their home can still show visitors something of the work, materials and everyday arrangements behind the district's nineteenth-century farming community.

🗳️ Bronwyn Halfpenny

Bronwyn Halfpenny entered Victoria's Parliament as the member for Thomastown in November 2010. Her subsequent parliamentary work included periods as government whip and acting speaker, alongside responsibilities in workplace safety, jobs and roads. In the workplace safety portfolio she co-chaired a taskforce examining workplace sexual harassment, while her jobs responsibilities included local procurement and employment programmes. Her connection is through elected representation of the Thomastown district. Her work brought local representation into debates about employment, public services and workplace conditions.

🥛 Johann Gottlob Siebel and Albert Siebel

Johann Gottlob and Christiane Siebel built their surviving farmhouse at Westgarthtown in 1860, replacing an earlier home. The original thirty-acre farm expanded to ninety acres, and descendants continued farming there until 1950. A grandson, Albert Siebel, established Pura Dairy at Preston in 1934 to sell Westgarthtown milk. The business began with a single delivery cart serving a few streets and grew into a familiar national brand. The family's Thomastown farmhouse, with its unusual cellar and external bakeoven, preserves the agricultural setting behind that later commercial story.
